Staple Food Commodities Value Chain Analysis workshop

An analysis workshop to review data on staple food crop production and identify interventions to improve market access, infrastructure, and producer support.

The Staple Food Crops Value Chain Analysis Workshop addressed critical barriers facing staple food crop producers, particularly in land access, market data availability, and infrastructure gaps. Participants identified that fragmented information systems and a lack of centralized resources make it difficult for farmers to access essential services. The workshop proposed the creation of a centralized resource hub, modeled on the HIAP website, to consolidate educational tools, grant information, and compliance support for staple food producers.

Participants also discussed strategies to improve land access through GoFarm Hawaiʻi's upcoming land-linking tool, modeled on successful programs like Belize’s rent-to-own initiative. The workshop recommended developing clear legal frameworks and expanding mentorship programs to support new and beginning farmers. Building cooperative models for resource sharing, such as shared equipment services and marketing platforms, was highlighted as a scalable intervention.

Additionally, the workshop explored ways to improve market linkages by developing matchmaking marketplaces that connect producers directly with buyers. Participants emphasized the need for proactive communication strategies and incentives, such as cooperative purchasing discounts, to encourage participation in centralized platforms. By implementing these changes, the workshop identified significant opportunities to expand market access, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen Hawaiʻi Island's staple food crop sector.
