Pears
Pears also require chilling and are only cultivated experimentally on Hawaiʻi Island. Where successful, a few orchardists harvest low-chill Asian or European pear hybrids in cooler, upland microclimates.

Asian pears (Nashi) sometimes yield crispy, juicy fruit if nights are sufficiently cool. European types generally struggle unless they’re specialized low-chill selections. Farmers who manage to get decent harvests sell them directly, as shipping pears inter-island is rarely cost-effective at this scale. Consequently, most local pears stay in the immediate community, generating excitement among fruit enthusiasts and chefs seeking unique farm offerings. The overall market, however, is marginal and remains confined to boutique-scale production.
